First thing, our DEROS has officially changed now to April 4 so we will most likely be flying out on 2 April. We have been thinking about a lot of things like how we’re going to get the kids registered for school without an address and where we will be staying (hotel wise) and we think that it will be a lot easier if one of us flies to Washington ahead of time to find a house before hand. Going this route, we were thinking of sending myself in March to start the search. I could stay for a week, in your opinion is this enough time? Do you think this is even a good idea? We are looking for your experience and input. If, best case scenario, we are looking to close between the 10th and 15th April, then when do you think I should try to fly out there?
Thanks again for the help and I look forward to hearing from you.

It is pretty common for a spouse to come house hunting…my wife and I show homes together, so you wouldn’t be looking with me alone (maybe not an issue, but I like to point it out because of the times we live in).
The first of March would be good timing for your trip. Depending on who the lender is, 30 days is the average to close. Jan Ward is typically about 3 weeks….but we need to allow time for the inspection etc.
A typical house hunting trip is usually 3-4 days. There are only so many homes on the market (we hope to have all of the desirable ones on the list before your arrival), and we will usually see all of the homes that fit your criteria within two days.
I also suggest that as soon as you have orders in hand (and it sounds like you may already)…call the Rainier Inn (Lodge) on Ft Lewis and make a reservation for when you report (253-964-0211). They book up early, and if you have pets, they only have a few “cabins” that allow pets. They probably won’t make a reservation for house hunting…but I can provide you with local hotel info if needed.
Please let me know if I can answer any other questions, and if you need hotel info…I have a list of several good ones that are close to my office….that I know are good to go based on past client experiance.
Thanks, Phil
