Joint Base Lewis-McChord BAH chart and rates are available on the PCS/Relo Info Page of the Buyers Toolbox. If you are PCS'ing to the JBLM, you can find out what your BAH (basic allowance for housing) rate is. BAH for both Ft. Lewis and McChord Air Force Base is based on Tacoma Wa, zip 98433.
The Ft. Lewis Lodge or a Hotel?
When you arrive in Washington, either TDY house hunting, or permanently, you will need a place to stay while house hunting. Let me know if you would like an email list of local hotels that my customers have stayed at in the past. I always do informal surveys, and the hotels I recommend in Lacey or Olympia have all gotten good marks from others who have stayed there. If you are interested in staying at the Fort Lewis Lodge (Lodging) or at McChord Lodge, they can be reached at the following numbers:

JBLM Post Housing and Ft. Lewis Post Housing:
If you are expecting to purchase or rent a home in Washington, I recommend that you contact the post housing office prior to your arrival to learn about the availability of on base housing and govt. quarters. The post housing (housing office) number is 253-967-5334. The housing office is located in Waller Hall, the in and out processing center for the installation. Check out all your options for both on post housing and purchasing on the economy prior to making a decision.
Communities around the perimeter of Joint Base Lewis-McChord:
About the area; close to the gate: The closest communities to the I-5 gates are Lakewood WA, Dupont WA, and Steilacoom WA. All three are varied communities, with home prices ranging from 200k+/- thru several million. Steilacoom is a little known community on Puget Sound, make sure you drive out to visit...it's minutes from post.
About the area, north of base: The communities north of Joint Base Lewis McChord include of Tacoma, and its suburbs. The cities of Puyallup, Graham, Spanaway, and Lakewood are all considered to be suburbs of Tacoma. Out the back gate, the town of Roy, McKenna and Yelm are also very accessable and have become very desirable areas for military relocation buyers moving to Wasington.
About the area, south of base: The most popular area south of post is Lacey Wa, Lacey is about 10 minutes from the main gate. The northern edge of Lacey is referred to as Hawks Prairie, which has a fairly large military and retired population. Adjacent to Lacey is Olympia and Tumwater. Olympia is the Washington State Capital, and is also home to a very large military and retired military population. Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater have essentially merged into one large community.
Ft. Lewis area Information and Comments:
Military home buyers make up a very large segment of the local housing market, the current active duty population of Ft. Lewis is approx 30,000...the population of Lacey Washington is 38,000, Olympia Wa 50, 000, and Lakewood Wa is 30,000.
VA home buyers are the best qualified buyers in the JBLM area real estate market today. VA home loans are one of the few that still allow for a zero down payment, and have less stringent qualification criteria than conventional loans.
